What happened to Tome

Tome was one of the first AI presentation tools to get real attention, and its slides genuinely looked good. In October 2024 the company began moving away from presentations; in March 2025 it confirmed that Tome Slides would sunset; and on 30 April 2025 the presentation product shut down. The company said publicly that it had not found a sustainable path for consumer AI slides — its audience sat largely on free and low-cost plans. The team now builds Lightfield, an AI-native CRM, which has no presentation use case. The Tome brand was later acquired by AngelList.

The practical consequence: user decks that weren’t exported before the cutoff were deleted. If you still have Tome files locally, keep them somewhere safe — there is no longer a service to re-import them into.

The lesson worth taking from it

Tome’s shutdown is a useful reminder when picking any presentation tool: ask what happens to your decks if the product disappears. A tool whose output only lives inside its own web app leaves you with nothing when the service ends. A tool that exports a real, editable .pptx leaves you with files that open in PowerPoint, Keynote, and Google Slides regardless of what happens to the vendor.

That is the single most important question to ask of an AI presentation tool, and it is easy to overlook while you are comparing template galleries.

What to look for in a Tome alternative

• Real export, not just view links. Editable .pptx with live text and native charts — not slides flattened into images.
• Your own template. If you have brand rules, the tool should apply them rather than forcing its house style.
• Pricing that matches your usage. Occasional deck-builders are better served by one-time credits than a monthly subscription.
• A free tier you can actually evaluate. Enough to build a real deck end to end before paying.
